Dear friends,

As an organization, we join the country in mourning and protesting the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and so many others. This horrific violence is rooted in centuries of institutionalized racism that continues to pervade our country. We stand in solidarity with our Black constituents, neighbors, partners, friends, and their respective loved ones. We also stand aligned with the Black Lives Matter movement and those who continue to organize against injustice.

To those feeling pain, grief, and outrage in the wake of these unjust and horrific events, know that we see you. We hear you. And we stand with you.

Our team struggled to find the words to fully encompass how racial inequality and violence has affected our neighborhood, but now is not the time to sit on the sidelines. We know that a statement is not enough—it must be followed by decisive action. The diversity of our community is our strength. As an affordable housing provider, ABCDC was founded on the principles of equity and inclusion. While racist policies continue to affect housing and segregation in our community, we commit to fight alongside our residents and ensure that everyone has a safe, affordable home regardless of the color of their skin.

We know that as a majority-white organization, we still have a lot to learn about racial justice and we need to do more to ensure that we are fighting with our community members of color and creating inclusive spaces. It is not enough for us to continue our work as usual; we must take steps to practice anti-racism at every level of our organization. This will take constant work and reflection and we are determined to continue learning, organizing, and creating tangible change in our neighborhood and beyond.
