Allston Brighton Community Development Corporation

Working together, building community

We are pleased to announce that Allston Brighton CDC was selected as a grantee for the third round of funding under the Affordable Housing Decarbonization Grant Program for the Deep Energy Retrofit at the Ashford Street Lodging House!

This grant program was established through the Department of Energy Resources in 2023 to fund deep energy retrofits and decarbonization efforts by affordable housing developers. The goals of this program are to “improve public health, preserve housing affordability for residents, provide local workforce opportunities, and accelerate Massachusetts’ clean energy transition.”

“We are extremely grateful to the Healey-Driscoll Administration for selecting Ashford Street as part of the 24 projects who received this funding,” said ABCDC’s Executive Director, John Woods. “Having the ability to preserve supportive housing opportunities for our community, while also prioritizing green energy upgrades, is extremely important for residents across the Commonwealth.”

This DOER funding will directly support the Deep Energy Retrofit (DER) on the property. Planned improvements will include a new roof, adding fresh air ventilation systems, all new electric heat pumps to provide heating and cooling, and additional insulation. This decarbonization project will reduce energy usage by at least 50%. This project will also address the safety and well-being of current and future residents of these 12 units of affordable housing by making much-needed interior repairs and ADA upgrades!

“Over the past several years, ABCDC has made a commitment to pursuing green technologies at our properties to not only reduce the environmental impact of development, but to create healthy homes for residents in our neighborhood,” remarked ABCDC’s Director of Real Estate, Caitlin Robillard. “We are playing a small part in the broader goal of mitigating the impacts of climate change and we are thankful that we have so many partners and leaders across the State who share in that commitment.”
