Working together, building community

This past month has been a great start to the Deep Energy Retrofit (DER) at the Brian J. Honan Apartments. The general contractor on the project, Haycon Building LLC, and their construction team started work on the four units in Building G in December, where they are working to replace all the windows, create a super-insulated and air-tight envelope, install high-efficiency VRF air source heat pumps to provide heating and cooling, as well as energy recovery ventilators (ERVs) to provide fresh air into all units.

One of the most exciting and apparent upgrades in the building is the installation of the INTUS triple-pane uPVC windows. These windows feature three layers of glass and additional insulation which improve energy efficiency and soundproofing. With the proximity of the Mass Pike, these windows are an important aspect to ensuring the comfort and safety of residents.

The DER at these apartments also includes interior upgrades which vary unit-by-unit. These include updating appliances, flooring, doors, and other small fixes to make sure the apartments best serve the families who call them home. All units are also going to be getting a fresh coat of paint!

An important aspect of this project is limiting the time that residents need to be relocated out of their apartments. Since the team is working on construction one building at a time, folks only need to be relocated for a total of 6 weeks. We work closely with Judy Cohn Relocation Consultants to make sure that residents are confident and comfortable throughout this process. The residents in Building G will be able to move back in to their newly renovated apartments in roughly two weeks.

Building G is the first at Brian J Honan to undergo a DER, with the rest to soon follow!
